Among neighbouring countries such as the Maldives, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and other SAARC countries, India has one of the fastest broadband internet speeds. However, according to a recent report by Ookla, India lags behind in terms of mobile internet speeds. According to the Speedtest Global Index for January 2021, India ranks 131 in the world for mobile internet speeds, with an average download speed of 12.41Mbps and an upload speed of 4.76Mbps. India clearly lags behind the global average of 46.74 Mbps download and 12.49 Mbps upload speeds. Here are seven countries in the region that rank higher or lower than India in terms of mobile internet speeds.

The Maldives has three times the speed of India when it comes to mobile broadband.
According to the Ookla Speedtest Global Index, the average download and upload speeds for mobile internet in the Maldives are 44.30Mbps and 13.83Mbps, respectively. This is more than three times faster than India’s average mobile internet speed.

Pakistan has second-fastest mobile internet speeds among SAARC countries
The average download and upload speed in Pakistan for mobile internet 17.95Mbps and 11.16 Mbps respectively, as per Ookla Speedtest Global Index. Ookla claims that Pakistan had the second-fastest mobile internet speeds among SAARC countries in Q4 2020.

In terms of mobile internet speeds, Nepal came in third among SAARC countries.
According to an Ookla report from Q4 2020, Nepal had higher mobile internet speeds than India and Sri Lanka. Nepal has an average download speed of 18.44Mbps and an upload speed of 11.73Mbps, according to the Ookla Speedtest Global Index report.

Sri Lanka’s mobile internet speeds are faster than India’s.
According to Ookla’s latest report, Sri Lanka had higher mobile internet speeds than India in Q4 2020. Sri Lanka has an average download speed of 17.36 Mbps and an upload speed of 8.40 Mbps, according to the Ookla Speedtest Global Index report.

Bhutan, according to Ookla, has faster mobile internet speeds than India.
Bhutan outperformed India, according to Ookla’s latest report, with download speeds approaching 15 Mbps.

In terms of mobile broadband speeds, Bangladesh lags behind India.
Bangladesh’s mobile internet speeds are slower than India’s, according to Ookla, with average download speeds of 10.57 Mbps and upload speeds of 7.19 Mbps.

Among the SAARC countries, Afghanistan has the slowest mobile internet speeds.
